Pedal Another Mile

Bicycling, death, life after death.

Day 1: Glenwood to Atlantic - 60.14 miles

I'm now a member of the 4H club that RAGBRAI has been known for. Heat, hills, humidity, headwinds. Once the hills stopped, about 8 or so miles from Atlantic, the nasty headwind took over. It was 92 at 10:30, heat index of 102.

The people here are very very nice.  They are genuinely happy that there towns get taken over for a day or two.  This is like the super bowl for some of these towns- any fundraising efforts they are going to get cannot be topped by thousands of cyclists riding through.

Lots of characters out there.  A kid running...RUNNING... Ragbrai.  I don't know if he'll make it but go for it, dude!  Oh, did I mention he was running IN FLIP FLOPS?  I passed him at mile 6 or so and thought he was just running between farm houses.  Then I stopped for breakfast and passed him again.  It was then that I asked where he was running.  He said Atlantic and then eventually to Davenport.

Back to the hills... there were no shortage of them.  The "speed bump" just a block into the route was bigger than anything around our house.  That one went pretty well.  Then another and another and another.  After a dozen I decided to stop worrying about if I was going to make it up them and just blank out and pedal. I never had to walk up any of them.

I have never climbed so much in one day. The last three miles were pretty bad because of that stupid wind. But I looked down at all the names on my bike and kept on keeping on. 1 day in the books. 1 of 2 days that really concerned me in the books. Tomorrow is the other one.

Then there's the option to make Tuesday's 71.8 mile ride a 100 mile one.  But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Here's some pics from Day 0 & Day 1.
